About this Whisky Cellar release The Whisky Cellar’s Private Cellars Selection brings us this 13-year-old Glenrothes, distilled in 2012 and bottled in 2025. Matured in an oloroso sherry octave (a cask around one-eighth the size of a traditional butt) the whisky has enjoyed a particularly intense wood influence. Octave casks are prized for accelerating maturation, creating a bold, concentrated style in a shorter time. Bottled at cask strength (50.1%), with natural colour and no chill filtration, the outturn is just 170 bottles worldwide. The nose opens with dried figs, raisins, and hints of cinnamon and vanilla. The palate is full and mouth-coating, offering flavours of dark chocolate, ripe plums, and gentle oak. A long, warming finish brings sweet sherry richness and lingering spice. Founded in 1878 in the heart of Speyside, Glenrothes is best known for its fruity, sherried house style - often featuring orchard fruits, citrus, and baking spice. Much of its output is reserved for blends like Cutty Sark and The Famous Grouse, making single cask bottlings like this relatively rare. The oloroso octave finish adds another dimension, amplifying richness while retaining Glenrothes’ elegant, fruity character.
