About this Woodrow's whisky This striking Highland single malt from Woodrow's of Edinburgh showcases Deanston in a particularly thoughtful and characterful guise. Distilled in October 2008 and bottled in May 2025, this 16-year-old expression forms part of the Warehouse Reserve range, a series defined by careful cask selection and a willingness to explore less conventional finishing styles. After its initial maturation, the whisky was finished in a second fill ex-Staoisha Oloroso quarter cask. This is a fascinating choice: quarter casks accelerate interaction between spirit and wood, while the second-fill Oloroso tempers overt sweetness, allowing texture and savoury complexity to shine. The fact that the cask previously held Staoisha (Bunnahabhain’s heavily peated style) adds an additional, subtle layer of smoky influence rather than dominating the profile. On the nose, bright pineapple and orchard fruits lead, followed by hints of tobacco leaf and gently charred wood. The palate is where this whisky truly distinguishes itself: exceptionally waxy and mouth-coating, with flavours of crème brûlée, lemon meringue, ripe peaches, lychee, and a measured thread of cigar smoke weaving through the sweetness. The finish lingers with soft smoke, gradually mellowing into white chocolate and a warming touch of nutmeg. Bottled at 49.8% ABV with natural colour and without chill filtration, this is a composed yet quietly expressive Deanston - one that balances fruit, wax, smoke, and restrained sherry influence with real finesse. With an outturn of just 84 bottles, it is a genuinely limited release that will appeal to those who enjoy layered Highland malts with texture and nuance rather than overt cask dominance.
