The History of the Panzerhaubitze Hummel The first designs for the Panzerhaubitze Hummel were developed in 1942, when the Germans needed mobile artillery to support armoured units. It was armed with the 15 cm sFH 18 (L/30) howitzer, mounted on a special Geschützwagen III/IV chassis, combining elements from the PzKpfw III and IV tanks with new parts designed from scratch. The vehicle had an open-topped superstructure with rear doors for easy ammunition loading. The crew consisted of a driver, radio operator, commander, gunner, and two loaders.
